Chapter 13

Following breakfast, Mr. Townes had suggested to Blake and Chris that we find some sort of team-related activity to do while he ran into town to throw out the garbage.

After Mr. Townes had left, everyone turned to Blake and Chris.

They asked us what we would like to do, saying we had about an hour before Mr. Townes would be back.

Everyone began shouting different ideas. Mikey wanted a rematch in the rock skipping competition. Jake suggested we go swimming. Danny added onto that suggestion by saying we should see who can swim out the farthest, which was quickly shot down by Blake.

“We could go explore that cave up on the side of the hill.” Suggested Luke Graham.

Luke’s suggestion was met with silence by the group. Everyone turned to look at him. I felt a sense of unease just hearing the idea come up and didn’t want to go.

“Yeah, I think that would be a blast!” Luke’s brother Spencer chimed.

A sudden uproar of support came from the rest of the group. Everyone, except me.

Blake and Chris exchanged glances, as if considering the proposal before saying they were in.

“But we have to be quick about it,” Blake said sternly, “If my dad were to find out, all of us will be running wind sprints until we blow chunks. Got it?”

Everyone started cheering with excitement, including Danny. He looked over and noticed I wasn’t joining in on the fun.

He pulled me to the side.

“What’s going on, Bender?” he asked, gripping my shoulder.

“I-I don’t know if I want to go check out the cave.” I admitted.

“What? Why?” he questioned in a shocked tone.

“I just don’t think it’s safe.” I replied.

I couldn’t really explain it any better than that. I just knew that something about this section of land felt off. I couldn’t put my finger on it. Maybe the story last night shook me more than I was willing to admit, even if there were rational explanations for everything.

“Oh, would you stop being a wuss?” he joked. “You have always loved checking out stuff like this. Man up.”

“Listen, I can’t explain it. I don’t know why, but I just can’t shake the feeling that there’s something wrong with these woods and that cave.” I replied.

“What’s going on here, guys?” Blake asked.

We turned our gaze over to Blake who was now standing just a few feet away with his hands on his hips. The rest of the group was at the edge of the woods, staring back at us, waiting.

“Bender doesn’t want to go.” Danny blurted.

“Well, you sure aren’t gonna stay down here by yourself. So, you’re coming. You don’t have to go in the cave if you don’t want to, but you aren’t stayin down here.” Blake said in a tone that told me there was not going to be any reasoning with him.

“Fine.” I muttered softly, feeling a little dejected, and a lot of worry.

I couldn’t believe that Danny snitched on me like that, so I gave him a solid punch into his shoulder.
